Hamilton's aging infrastructure and clay soil make drain blockages especially common, particularly in older neighbourhoods below the escarpment.

Hamilton operates one of the oldest water and sewer systems in Canada. In the lower city — Crown Point, Gibson, the North End — homes built in the 1920s to 1940s still rely on original clay and cast iron drain laterals that are now 80 to 100 years old. Hamilton's dense clay and Queenston Shale subsoil holds water and shifts with every freeze-thaw cycle, slowly opening pipe joints for root entry and debris buildup. The lower city also runs a combined sewer system, where a single pipe carries both stormwater and wastewater — during heavy rainfall this system gets overloaded and backs up into basements. After a major watermain break in March 2026, city engineers confirmed that many residential sewer laterals are at or past end of service life.
